Call for Papers for the VIII Centenary of the Death of Saint Angelo of Licata
on
CONFERENCE OF STUDIES, Licata 15 May 2021
The Eighth Centenary of the martyrdom of Saint Angelo (1220-2020), one of the first saints of the Carmelite Order along with Saint Albert ofusalem (†1307), represents an important occasion to rediscover and value his figure. For this reason, the General Postulation and the General Archive of the Carmelite Order have decided to organise a scientific conference, aimed at reflecting on and further deepening the study of the Saint from a historical, hagiographical, and iconographical perspective.
Sant'Angelo, in fact, is counted as Father of the Order from the Carmelite Order and its role, both symbolic and iconographic, has been central since the late Middle Ages, appearing in hagiographic and spiritual depictions and works. The conference will be an opportunity to bring a figure of such relevance back to the forefront of scholars' attention, a figure that has not yet been the subject of specific and systematic scientific in-depth study.
The proposed contributions may consider, among other things, the following themes:
1) the history and reception of his figure within the Carmelite Order through the centuries;
iconography and historical-artistic aspects;
3) liturgical aspects;
4) hagiographical texts, literary traditions and references included even in non-Carmelite sources;
5) History of the Carmelite Order in Sicily in the Late Middle Ages, with particular reference to the historical context of the Saint;
6) the relationship of his figure with the other two great founders of the mendicant orders, Saint Francis and Saint Dominic.
Proposals for papers must be a maximum of 300 words and should be sent, along with your biographical and bibliographical profile, to archivio@ocarm.org no later than 30 November 2020. You will be notified whether your contribution has been accepted for the conference by 10 December 2020. Papers, with a maximum duration of 25 minutes, may be delivered in Italian, English, Spanish, or French. They will subsequently be published in a volume edited by Edizioni Carmelitane.
