Library Regulations

This Regulation was approved by the Scientific Council of the’The Carmelite Institute the xxxxx, according to no. 7 of the rules of the same Institute approved by the General Council, Session 135, of 3 December 2021.

1. NATURA

The Carmelite General Library is a tool for scientific research and support for the activities of the’The Carmelite Institute, for the members of the International Centre St Albert (CISA), and for anyone who wishes to make use of the Carmelite Order's library heritage

2. Users

2.1 The Library carries out its cultural promotion activities through both consultation and lending of its existing materials.

2.2. On days when the facility is open according to the calendar, users are both internal and external:

a) Internal users: these are both the components of the’The Carmelite Institute, both CISA members and Order members.

b) external users: these are all other interested scholars. To access the Library, they will need to present either their university card or an identity document. Furthermore, they will need to register their name, address, qualification, and volumes consulted in the dedicated register.

3. Timetable

The Carmelite General Library is open:

3.1. For internal users: Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM; and if necessary, on request, at other times.

3.2. For external users: Monday to Thursday from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, Friday from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm.

3.3 It remains closed during August and on public and religious holidays.

4. ACCESS AND CONSULTATION

4.1. Before entering, users must leave rucksacks and bags in the Librarian's office, pending the Library being equipped with dedicated lockers.

4.2. The consultation service is free of charge in the Library's reading rooms, both for internal and external users. In the consultation room, at the entrance to the Library, bibliographic tools, the general paper catalogue (by author and subject) for the Carmelite section, and the related Carmelite Annual Bibliography (books and articles) from 1954 onwards are available to readers. The electronic catalogue for both sections is currently being implemented.

4.3. a) For internal users, consultation can be done independently by taking volumes directly from the shelves. At the end of the day, the volumes must be returned to their place. In the event that they wish to consult them further, they may leave the volumes on the reading room table, but first they must fill in the register and the card that they will place on the shelves in place of the volumes.

b) External users wishing to consult bibliographic materials must request them by completing the register and form, which the Librarian will place in the volume's spot. The Librarian will promptly deliver the requested materials. Once consultation is complete, books must be left on the tables. If a user needs to continue their research beyond the daily closing time, they must return the books to the Librarian, who will store them.

5. Loan

5.1. a) For internal users: the maximum number of loans at any one time is 15, for a duration of 90 days, renewable for a further 30. For specific consultation or loan requirements, specific authorisations may be requested from the Librarian on a case-by-case basis.

b) Volumes may not be removed from the CISA without prior request and receipt of the necessary authorisation.

5.2. For external users: the maximum number of loans is 3 at any one time, for a duration of 30 days, renewable for a further 15 days, which can also be requested via e-mail. The loan service is free.

5.3. For both internal and external users: before the summer closure (see Timetable), borrowed books (even if they are not yet due for return) must be returned regardless, in order to carry out the loan check and stocktake.

5.4. The following are excluded from the loan:

– Books published before 1899

– Books catalogued in the «Reserve» section»

Unbound magazines

– books bearing the inscription «Ne auferatur e Bibliotheca»

– Reference materials (encyclopædias, dictionaries, special collections, bibliographical indexes, geographical atlases…)

6USER RESPONSIBILITIES

They undertake to return them within the established timeframe and in the same condition as they received them. Loss will incur a payment equal to the value of the unreturned item, which for internal users will be charged to their respective Province. It is forbidden to borrow on one's own name for other people. In case of transgression, the penalty of excluding the user from any further borrowing will be applied.

7. INFORMATION AND REFERENCES

The bibliographic and reference assistance service is available to all users.
